Hi Doug — I’ve been in recovery for 13 years myself, and NA played a huge role in that. Having said that, the long term success rates of twelve step programs — and really anything in the field of mental health — are pretty low. I should have clarified that my 10–15% comment is a commonly cited number among the various psychologists and counselors with whom I have worked over the years. I believe there are research studies as well that point to that number, though as you know it is almost impossible to track long term success of those in recovery. Come to think of it, defining success is fairly hard, too, because sobriety is more than just not using.
Most professionals will tell you that a multi pronged approach is the way to go- the approach that you said you had taken, for example. Multiple supports from multiple places. you know what they say about eggs and baskets. Thanks!
