Great analysis. These newer movies make me wonder why Return of the Jedi gets hated on. By comparison, it’s Lawrence of Arabia.
Holdo’s character should have been replaced by Ackbar IMO. Would have given him the hero’s death he deserved.
Also — Finn is the most poorly realized central character I’ve ever seen. He makes no sense. I’m surprised nobody is talking about this. Watch how he acts and talks in both movies- this is a guy who’s been a Stormtrooper his entire life. You’d think he’d be a bit more stilted. He’s also an opportunity for a Tin Man exploration, but they fail to do that. His defining feature seems to be that he is black.
I’m all for diversity and inclusion in SW, but Rose is another worthless character. Bad writing with her, too. She robs Finn of a heroic death for absolutely no good reason. Her sister at least had the good sense to die doing something important.
It baffles me that a movie that will net 1.5 billion was allowed to be made with such huge issues. At a staff meeting, they could have said — look, we can make 2 billion on this thing if we spend another week revising the screenplay. Baffles me that these issues don’t get addressed in pre-production. Seems like bad business.
